Most sunglasses have one setting: dark. Put them on at the trailhead at seven in the morning and you are looking at the world through a filter it does not need yet. The Flagler starts clear — properly clear, the kind you can wear in a car park, under cloud, in the last hour before dusk — and tints only as far as the light in front of you actually asks for.

That is why the road still reads like a road. Surface texture, a wet patch, a loose edge: you see them in their own colour, not through a layer of artificial dark.

Built for terrain where the light changes every corner

Exposed ridge, then tree cover, then out into open sun again. A fixed tint is wrong twice on that kind of ground — too dark in the shade, not enough in the glare. A photochromic lens with a clear base has the widest range to move through, so it is right more of the time and you spend the afternoon not squinting. Less squinting is most of what people mean when they say their eyes felt fresher at the end.

A semi-rimless shield that stays out of your way

One continuous lens across both eyes, held from above by a slim brow bar, with the lower edge left open and cut high. Nothing sits in your downward view and nothing presses on your cheekbones when you are looking up a climb. Two moulded pads carry it on the nose, the TR90 frame flexes to the shape of your head, and the temples finish in curved matte tips.

Discreet enough to keep on afterwards

Because the lens is clear rather than blacked out, the Flagler reads closer to eyewear than to equipment. Black, silver, transparent and three more frame colours; six lens finishes; polycarbonate or TAC. Long ride, then somewhere with a roof — you do not have to take them off at the door.
